The university I attended has a financial support group called Partners for Progress, whose main mission is to raise capital for different university projects. Aside from highlighting the typical endowments and ongoing unversity needs, they annually pick one specific way alumni can give back to help improve the school. Today I got a letter from them asking if I would like to purchase a window in a 5-building apartment complex on campus. The windows apparently have not been changed in over 50 years, and a serious draft manages to blow through the cracks/gaps each winter, raising both the energy costs and number of complaints from frozen students. Total cost of the project is $500,000, and for a gift of $500 (half a window), each donor will have a small brass thank you plate conveniently attached.
I must admit, the writeup was convincing. I would like to give a little something to help out my shivering college chums, especially at Christmastime. What charities/donations are you asked to give to? What interesting items (like a window, brick, children's sock, etc.) have you ever been asked to purchase?

that's a great idea for raising support... i bet people feel much more involved and useful when they actually know what their donation is being used for. and they're more likely to give a little more than they would otherwise.
I love that Heifer International asks groups to sponsor a heifer, especially because every time I've gotten the pitch from a volunteer, I ask the simple question, "So, what kind of cow is a heifer?" and the person has never known. Maybe, I'm too much of a farm geek cause it amuses me.
What a cool site! You can give a heifer, water buffalo, flock of chicks, llama, trio of rabbits, even honeybees. http://www.heifer.org
When I was a kid our church didn't have a bathroom so they were asking people to give money for a potty. (The people in the neighborhood were tired of seeing us girls go outside and squat.) Franklin Graham askes for money for crutches, wheelchairs, water wells, tents, you name it. I think a cool donation idea would be a "PUT MY SON THROUGH COLLEGE" fund. For everyone who gave, your son would name a pet or child after them. Anyone want to give?
