I have a fondness for foreign films. There's something about watching a movie and needing to pay attention to every line, every word, to be able to have any clue what's going on. It's an entertaining challenge. I showed a foreign film to college students last year, and it struck me how quickly some of them lost interest. It was a good movie, but you miss one line .... you have no hope of recovering it. It's like to have to participate in the movie to experience it. It's a big market too, apparently. Blockbuster has entire sections devoted to foreign films, and there are websites that list the 100 greatest (http://www.foreignfilms.com/).
Here are some notable movies I've watched in other tongues:
Life is Beautiful (Italian)
Man on the Train (French)
Secret Ballot (Farsi)
Autumn Spring (Czech)
Passion of the Christ (Aramaic)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Chinese)
What was a movie that you watched where if you missed one minute, you were pretty much lost for the rest of the movie?

um... i'm lost during most movies i watch. i get easily distracted by what i see (the shoes someone's wearing, the clock on the wall, the scenery) and miss what they're saying. and they're always the most important lines. plus sometimes the good guy is actually the bad guy who looks like the other guy and i just keep thinking, i wish i had a dress like that one girl... where can i get one... why are they blowing up that building... ooh, that's a cool car. you see?
You should definitely check out Turles Can Fly- set in Iraq on the eve of the U.S. invasion. It follows some orphaned street-children living in the northern part of Iraq. One of those movies that is on your mind long after you watch it.
oh oh I want to see that movie Jen.
have you ever seen 12monkeys? that movie is really really confusing if you even blink.
I was really confused with Mission Impossible III. My mom said she understood all of it, but I was lost after the 3rd or 4th explosion/face change.
I saw the movie Fargo on tv one time. I think I'll save that for another post.
I can watch a movie at least 10 times because it takes me that long to actually watch it all. I catch parts here and parts there because I hardly ever just sit and watch a movie. As for Mission Impossible III, I wasn't looking for any deep meanings I'm sure they were there but I was just watching Tommy Boy.
